We got orders to Washington D.C.
MO2 and I are very familiar with DC. I grew up there (1/2 the time), went to undergrad there, my Dad and sister live there. Although familiar, it was NOT our first choice of duty assignment.
Anyone who knows the National Capitol Region (NCR), is familiar with DC’s traffic and expense. Yes it is near family and there are a ton of things to do. I won’t have to drive an hour to go to Barnes & Noble, but then again I might sit in traffic for an hour to get 15 minutes down the road. I’m sort of spoiled now. MO2 and I work in the same building, the boys’ daycare is a five-minute drive away.
In DC, MO2’s job will be in VA and mine is in MD. I really, really wanted the ease of base housing. It will be a year wait at MO2’s base. My office is not on a base which means we are going to need to find a day care near my office. I just didn’t want to run around NCR with infants. Also, my job is a prestigious (or so they say) position as a staffer in a new position. I don’t want to be on some general’s staff. I just want to be a chief of my own department and be left alone. I tried to get them to “unsubmit” my name but it didn’t work. The sad part is, since having the twins I could care a fig about my career. I just want to be a Mom, not necessarily a SAHM but someone’s whose first priority is their kids, not some general. I am worried about an expectation for travel which I don’t want to do.
The good news is:
1. We are near family 2. We are near the house that I own that I will retire to 3. We have many friends in this area. 4. there is a good newspaper 5. public transportation 6. museums and restaurants. 7. free babysitting with grandparents (if I ever want to leave the boys which is never).
Now I just have to sell my house, my early report date is in 5 months!
